As professionals in the field of adult day care, J. Psiharis & Associates, Inc is pleased to introduce the SPARC Method created by JPA consultant Samantha Twigg-Johnson. It is a successful and effective means of integrating art into programming for clients with memory impairments



Sensitivity  Clients’ emotional, physical and social needs are tenderly met by the instructor throughout the SPARC session. Although protests such as “I’m no good at art!” are responded to with warm skepticism, clients are always treated with respect, including giving them the choice to decline participation.


Physicality  Various forms of non-verbal communication are used to put clients at ease and show them how to get started. The instructor’s reassuring tone of voice and body language benefit everybody in the classroom, and are especially important for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.


Artfulness SPARC treats the process of striving for beauty as art in itself. Clients need no previous experience to engage in this sometimes scary but always revitalizing activity. Curiosity, openness and encouragement are all that’s necessary.


Repetition Offering clients weekly classes establishes a routine and an increasingly familiar setting where confidence can flourish. Drawing repetitive geometric patterns to the rhythm of upbeat music is an activity that even people with severe memory loss and vision problems can enjoy, and is a wonderful warm-up exercise for everyone.


Creativity  The purpose of every SPARC session is to unleash the creativity of each client. While themes and assignments are provided to get creative juices flowing, clients are encouraged to use the materials at hand to follow their own muse. Ultimately it is that radiant feeling of accomplishment, stemming from heartfelt creative action that defines SPARC success.
